The Graves of Paxos

An underwater geological wonder on the island’s western side

The western coastline of Paxos is home to one of the Ionian’s most striking natural phenomena: the Sea Caves. This is a complex of dozens of marine caves of immense geological and ecological value. In these caves, some of which communicate with one another underground, the sunlight filters through the deep-blue waters, creating brilliant reflections.
Access to the Sea Caves is possible only by sea, and the boat tour of Paxos is an unforgettable experience. Departing from Gaios, you will discover in succession the impressively large Cave of Ypapanti and Achai, a cave system with labyrinthine passages.
Special mention should be made of Ortholithos, a gigantic vertical rock rising from the sea in front of a cave, as well as Trypitos, an imposing natural stone arch resembling a bridge over the Ionian. Local legends even say that these caves served as romantic hideaways for mythical sea creatures, adding a touch of mystery to swims in their crystal-clear waters.
The distances between the caves are short, and the tour of the Sea Caves is considered an easy sea route for organised excursion boats, although caution and experienced handling are required when westerly winds are blowing.
Explore the Ionian Sea and admire the wild beauty of the sheer cliffs in perfect harmony with the calm of the hidden beaches found inside some of the caves. Enjoy this unrivalled experience in Paxos.
