A waterway of adventure
The Nestos River, one of the most vital wetlands in Europe, offers countless thrills. The heart of the action lies in its renowned Straits, an area of 23,800 stremmas, which constitutes a true natural monument. Officially designated as an “Aesthetic Forest”, it is part of the European Natura 2000 Network and is protected under the international Ramsar Convention, highlighting its global ecological significance. The river winds its way between steep cliffs, creating a natural playground that combines adrenaline with absolute tranquillity.
One of the most exciting experiences is canoe–kayak descent, which usually begins in Stavroupoli and ends at Toxotes. The calm waters make this activity ideal for all ages. If you are seeking greater intensity, rafting towards the Drama side offers more rapid passages, while canyoning in the Xeropotamos Gorge challenges the more adventurous with a rope-and-waterfall experience.
The action continues on land with the crossing of the Straits, one of the most impressive hiking routes in Greece. The stone-built path starting from the village of Galani was originally constructed by railway workers and is now part of the international E6 trail. The hike lasts approximately 7–8 hours and rewards you with sightings of birds such as eagles and vultures, as well as wild horses roaming freely in Livera. It is strongly recommended to observe all safety measures and, where necessary, to be accompanied by an experienced and certified instructor or guide.
Lush vegetation of junipers, wild lilacs and orchids accompanies every step, while you may also opt for 4x4 excursions, horse riding across the plains of Stavroupoli, or mountain biking. Whether from the water or the hillsides, the Nestos invites you to carve out your own path through the Greek landscape, among cool springs and specially designed recreation areas.
