Hiking in the Abode of the Olympian Gods
Mount Olympus, the mythical mountain of the gods, offers hiking trails of unparalleled beauty and varying difficulty. The initiation begins in Litochoro and the Myli area, where the international E4 trail crosses Enipeas Gorge. Lush vegetation, waterfalls, and steep cliffs create a dreamlike landscape. Along the way, you will encounter the Cave of Saint Dionysius and the historic 15th-century monastery.
The Route to the Summit
From the Prionia location (1,100m), a classic trail leads to the Spilios Agapitos refuge (2,100m) after three hours. The ascent becomes more challenging, the air chills, and the landscape transforms into a natural balcony with ancient Bosnian pine trees.
The ultimate goal is Mytikas, the highest peak in Greece (2,918m). The route from Skala to Mytikas is challenging, through a stark alpine landscape. Following the red markings on the rocks, you will arrive at a point where the panoramic view inspires awe. Zeus permitting, you can gaze upon half of Greece in absolute silence.
Refuges and Alternative Routes
Mount Olympus boasts nine main refuges (such as Giosos Apostolidis, Christos Kakalos, and Petrostrouga) that welcome hikers throughout the year. Beyond the classic ascent, there are routes such as:
At the Foot of Mount Olympus: Sacred Dion
5 km from the Pierian coast lies Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians. The archaeological site reveals a fortified city, sacred temples and public baths (thermae) dating back to AD 200. The Archaeological Museum houses rare finds, while the surrounding area offers monuments such as the church of Panagia Kontariotissa (11th century) and holy spring of Agia Kori in Vrontou, with its green lakes.
The allure of Mount Olympus is irresistible, offering an experience that balances logic and myth. Whether you seek the thrill of reaching the summit or the serenity of the Byzantine hermitages, Mount Olympus will lead you to the heart of the Greek nature.
