Archaeological Museum of Chania

A Journey Through the Light of History

In the historic Chalepa district, the new Archaeological Museum stands as an iconic monument to culture. Designed by the architect Theofanis Bobotis, the building symbolises the relics of the past emerging from the earth with its two linear volumes, while simultaneously offering panoramic views of the city's waterfront.
A Tour of the Permanent Exhibition
The exhibition unfolds across four halls, revealing the rich archaeological treasures of western Crete.

  • Hall 1: The narrative starts with the dawn of human presence and the splendour of the Minoan civilization. Rare artefacts highlight the significance of the palatial centre of Kydonia (modern-day Hania) and the arrival of the Mycenaeans.

  • Hall 2: It focuses on historical periods and the establishment of powerful city-states, such as Aptera. Particular emphasis is placed on minting and trade with the East and West, which are presented through digital projections.

  • Hall 3: Everyday life comes alive in this hall. The reconstruction of a house destroyed by the earthquake of 365 AD stands out, along with the unique collection of sculptures from the Asclepieion of Lissus. The experience is enhanced with tactile exhibits and the use of Braille for full accessibility.

  • Upper floor: The noteworthy Mitsotakis Collection is housed here, featuring artefacts spanning a vast chronological period, from the 4th millennium BC to the 3rd century AD.

A Holistic Experience
The Museum doesn't merely exhibit antiquities. It narrates life itself. Religion, war, recreation, and funerary beliefs. Through the use of digital media and a contemporary museological approach, the visit transforms into a captivating history lesson, establishing the Museum as a dynamic attraction and a true gem for the city of Hania.
