Festivals and Celebrations in Alexandroupoli

A journey through traditions, festivals and Thracian cultural heritage

From spring through to autumn, Alexandroupoli is transformed into an open-air cultural stage, where historical memory meets folk devotion and contemporary artistic expression.
The annual calendar of events begins in May with the “Eleftheria” celebrations, marking the anniversary of Alexandroupoli’s incorporation into Greece on 14 May 1920. This occasion sets the tone for an entire month filled with cultural events, concerts and sporting activities, culminating in the iconic seaside parade.
During the summer, Naval Week pays tribute to the sea that embraces the city, with festivities reaching their peak beneath the glow of the Lighthouse.
Traditional village feasts are also an integral part of local life, where religious devotion blends with music, dance and regional delicacies. Particularly notable are the celebrations of Saint Marina in Maistros (17 July) and Saint Panteleimon in Palagia. Equally worth experiencing is the feast at the picturesque chapel of Saint Paraskevi in Makri (26 July), the Traditional Dance Festival in Antheia in late July, and the Milina and Gaida (bagpipe) Festival in Kirki.
The custom of Saint John the Klidonas in June and the Old Town Festivals in Feres offer a rare opportunity to witness living traditions. The Feast of the Dormition on 15 August at Panagia Kosmosoteira is a major religious pilgrimage for the people of Thrace. In September, the region becomes a focal point for the primary sector with the Pan-Evros Agricultural Exhibition and the fair of the Holy Cross (14 September), attracting thousands of visitors and producers.
In late October, the Street Art Festival transforms the streets of Alexandroupoli into an open-air gallery, hosting artists from across Greece and abroad.
