Symi’s Spiritual Beacon
The Miraculous Icon and the Katholikon
In the heart of the monastery complex is the Katholikon, a church dating from the 15th century. There dominates the dazzling, imposing and full-body icon of Archangel Michael, adorned in silver and gold. The icon is considered miraculous and awe-inspiring to the visitor, while the church is decorated with exceptional Byzantine frescoes and a masterfully crafted wood-carved iconostasis, a sample of the high local wood-carving tradition.
Cultural Treasures
A visit to Panormitis is also an immersion into the history of the island. There are two excellent museums in the complex:
- The Ecclesiastical Museum: It hosts precious relics, icons, votive offerings and sacred vessels.
- The Folklore Museum: It offers a glimpse into the traditional life of Symi, displaying everyday objects, tools and clothing of past centuries. In addition, the monastery's rich library preserves rare Byzantine manuscripts and publications of great historical value.
One of the most fascinating elements of Panormitis is the tradition that wants the votive offering of the faithful (often contained in bottles) to "travel" to the sea and wash up in the bay of the Monastery. The iconic, multi-storey bell tower in the Baroque style welcomes pilgrims arriving by boat, creating an atmosphere of devoutness that remains indelible in memory.
