Cave of Agioi Theodoroi

A unique shrine carved into the rock

Just a few kilometres outside Alexandroupoli, near the village of Avantas, lies one of the most evocative religious monuments of Thrace. The rock-hewn church of Agioi Theodoroi, carved into the slopes of Mount Zoni, is a cave transformed into a place of worship, inspiring awe in every visitor. Its architecture and setting form a rare union between nature and Byzantine art.
As you step inside, time seems to stand still. The interior of the chapel is adorned with exceptional frescoes dating back to the 11th century. Carved and painted directly onto the rugged rock, these images retain a remarkable intensity and expressiveness. Among them, you will recognise rare depictions such as the Dormition of the Virgin, the figure of the Archangel, and the moving embrace of the Virgin Mary with Elizabeth. The Virgin in Prayer, alongside other sacred figures, completes this stone iconostasis, which has endured through the centuries as a rare testament to Middle Byzantine painting in the Evros region.
Approaching the cave, the route through the lush green landscape gently prepares you for the tranquillity that awaits within. It is an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity, historical insight and a moment of inner calm. The striking contrast between the wild natural surroundings and the refined religious artistry makes Agioi Theodoroi a truly unforgettable experience.
