The Balcony of Ilia and the Sanctuary of the Centaurs
In Ilia, at the foot of Mount Erymanthos and just 25 kilometres from Ancient Olympia, lies Foloi Forest. At an altitude of 630 metres, the only oak forest in the Balkans covers 4,200 hectares and is one of the oldest in Europe, captivating visitors with its seasonal colour changes.
Mythology and Etymology
The forest owes its name to the centaur Pholus, who hosted Heracles during his quest for the Erymanthian Boar. The tragic outcome of the battle with the other centaurs led to Pholus's death, but his name was immortalised in the area. Due to the breathtaking views from the plateau, the forest is often referred to as the Balcony of Ilia.
Activities and Trails
Part of the Natura 2000 network, the plateau is traversed by the Erymanthos and Selleis rivers. Its flat terrain is ideal for hiking, cycling, or scenic drives. At the Environmental Museum of Foloi, visitors can learn about the history and trails, including the M3 path, which leads to the Erymanthos Gorge with its stone bridges and watermills. Gravata Trail (Necktie Trail) is particularly popular, an 8-kilometre route named after the 300 neckties used to mark its path.
The Surrounding Area and Gastronomy
The forest is a paradise for mushroom enthusiasts, while the surrounding villages, such as Foloi and Koumanis, are renowned for their traditional tavernas. At an altitude of 800 metres, Lambia (Divri) stands proudly, one of the most beautiful villages in the Peloponnese, boasting traditional architecture that transports visitors to another era. Foloi is more than just a destination. It is an experience that blends ancient mythology with absolute natural serenity.
