Gialova Lagoon and Voidokilia Beach

Where the wetland meets one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece

In western Messenia, just outside Pylos, lies one of the most exceptional natural landscapes in Greece: the Gialova Lagoon and, just a few steps away, Voidokilia Beach. Here, nature operates with both precision and grace.
The Gialova Lagoon is one of the most important wetlands in the Peloponnese and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Its calm waters host a rich variety of birdlife, with more than 270 species of birds, including herons, flamingos, and raptors. It also serves as a vital stopover for birds travelling between Europe and Africa. Birdwatching in Gialova is renowned throughout Europe. The landscape changes constantly with the light and the seasons, while the trails around the lagoon are ideal for gentle hiking and nature observation.
Immediately adjacent, Voidokilia maintains an authentic, almost primal character, forming a near-perfect semicircle of fine, pale sand and turquoise waters. The area is part of the mythological realm of Nestor’s kingdom, adding a subtle historical depth to the scenery.
Start with a stroll around the lagoon and finish with a swim at Voidokilia. Restaurants, cafes, beach bars, and renowned accommodation options can be found in the wider area.
