Nipsa Forest

A natural sanctuary of untamed beauty

Just a short distance from Alexandroupoli, the Nipsa Forest unfolds like a lush green paradise, ideal if you are seeking tranquillity away from the fast pace of the city. The area is protected as a habitat under the European Natura 2000 network and is characterised by its dense vegetation, dominated by oak, plane and pine trees.
If you enjoy direct contact with nature, you are in the right place. This is an area of high ecological importance, as the streams and springs that run through it create small pockets of coolness and support a rich ecosystem of rare plants and wildlife.
Nipsa Forest offers an extensive network of routes for hiking and mountain biking. Following the trails, you will reach shaded ravines and clearings that provide panoramic views over the waters of the Nipsa reservoir, the Thracian Sea and Samothrace.
The area is ideal for family outings, as there are designated recreation areas where you can enjoy a picnic in the heart of the forest, accompanied only by birdsong and the gentle sound of flowing water.
A visit to Nipsa is not limited to nature alone, as it also holds historical surprises. According to Homeric tradition, this is believed to be the site of the “Sacred Grove” of the ancient Thracian tribe of the Cicones, while the forest is dotted with prehistoric places of worship among centuries-old plane trees. In the surrounding area, traces of ancient settlements, rock-cut tombs and altars have been discovered, bearing witness to human presence from prehistoric times through antiquity.
This fusion of natural beauty and historical memory lends the forest an almost mystical atmosphere, making it a destination that satisfies both the desire for adventure and the thirst for knowledge.
