A wetland of rare biodiversity in Thrace
The Evros Delta National Park covers an area of approximately 200,000 stremmas and constitutes an ecosystem of international renown. Most of it has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since the 1970s due to its remarkable biodiversity, and it is also included in the European Natura 2000 network.
Its importance is immense, as it hosts 304 bird species, including pygmy geese, Dalmatian pelicans and flamingos. This ecosystem serves as a safe breeding ground, a winter refuge for waterfowl arriving from Central and Eastern Europe, and a crucial stopover for migratory species.
Its biodiversity is further enriched by the presence of 46 fish species, 7 amphibian species, 21 reptile species and more than 40 mammal species.
A boat trip with traditional plaves (river boats) through the channels of the Evros will allow you to explore the wetland quietly and admire its rich riparian vegetation up close.
Particularly notable are the two most important lagoons of the area: Drana (also known as Dragon Lake), covering 6,000 stremmas, and Paloukia (or Kazikli), with an area of 2,800 stremmas.
Specially designed observation points enable you to watch wildlife without disturbing the tranquillity of the landscape.
Part of the charm of the Evros Delta lies in the ever-changing colours and scenery throughout the seasons. From the misty winter mornings to the bright summer light, the environment offers a profound sense of freedom and serenity.
A visit to the Information Centre is the ideal starting point, as it will prepare you to better understand this sensitive and valuable natural treasure.
