The Alpine Gem of Pindos Mountain range
The Myth of Dragons
Its name is inextricably linked to folklore tradition. Legend has it that this lake, as well as the Drakolimni of Smolikas, were inhabited by two enemy dragons. When enraged, they hurled enormous boulders at each other. This explains, according to the locals, why the banks of Tymfi are black with scattered white stones, while Smolikas is the opposite. Beyond the myth, the real "inhabitants" of the lake are the Alpine Newts, rare amphibians that resemble tiny dragons and survive in the icy waters.
Hiking the Trail
To reach this eerie landscape, the most popular starting point is the village of Mikro Papigo in Zagorochoria. The hike lasts about 4 hours. The route is challenging but rewarding, passing by local springs and the mountain refuge at Astraka col. From the refuge, the lake is just an hour's walk away.
The landscape around the lake is bare and Doric, evoking a profound sense of tranquility. The contrast between the lake’s deep blue waters and the rugged peaks creates a scenery of rare beauty, making the visit an initiation experience in the heart of continental nature.
