Monasteries and Convents on Mount Palouki

An excursion to the monasteries, convents, and the serenity of Skopelos

Mount Palouki towers over Hora, Skopelos and invites visitors on a different experience — a journey into nature, architecture, and deep spirituality. Among the pine forests and mountain paths lies a complex of post-Byzantine monasteries and convents, which are living monuments of Orthodox tradition and local history.
The area of Palouki is home to more than ten monastic complexes, most of which were built between the 15th and 18th centuries. The monasteries and convents are scattered along a route that combines natural beauty, unique views, and religious reverence.
The Monastery of Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros (Transfiguration of the Saviour), one of the oldest monasteries on the island, dates back to the 15th or 16th century, and stands out for its imposing dome and the old icons of the iconostasis.
A little higher, the Convent of Agia Varvara offers panoramic views towards Alonnisos. Its stone building complex, simple, yet elegant, now functions as a place for quiet contemplation. The nuns maintain the tradition of hospitality, offering visitors handmade komboskinia (prayer ropes), small amulets, and spoon sweets, made with products from Skopelos.
Nearby is the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, known for its atmosphere of peaceful reverence.
Also worth visiting is the Monastery of Evangelistria, which is reminiscent of a fortress. Built in the 18th century, with walls and battlements, it served as  the spiritual and social centre of the island for centuries. Inside, there is an impressive wood-carved iconostasis made by craftsmen from Chios, a true masterpiece that testifies to the wealth and religious prosperity of the time.
Excursions to the monasteries and convents of Palouki are experiences of deep contemplation. Regardless of religious beliefs, visitors from all over the world arrive there to follow a unique trail that features dense vegetation and unobstructed views of the Aegean Sea. The silence allows the sounds of nature to prevail in one of the most solemnly reverent destinations of the Sporades.
