An island of contrasts and living tradition

Skyros stands poised off the coast of Evia. It is the southernmost island of the Sporades, yet its architecture and the sharp contrasts of its landscape bring it close to the Cyclades. Its history is lost in the depths of time; great mythical heroes, such as Achilles and Theseus, passed through here, as did real conquerors who left a strong mark, such as the renowned Ottoman admiral and pirate Barbarossa.
The beautiful Chora is built amphitheatrically around the Byzantine castle that oversees the area. Boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, Skyros is characterised by a unique landscape. In the north, dense pine forests and lush green expanses dominate, while to the south, it takes on an arid, wild appearance. There, in the rocky and waterless part of the island, rises Kochylas, its highest mountain, where the small Skyrian ponies live freely. These are a rare, indigenous breed of small horses, with characteristics that harken back to very ancient types of equines.
The island’s centuries-old tradition is preserved through customs that have remained unchanged over time and through folk arts that survive today, such as woodcarving, pottery, embroidery, and weaving. Among the most unique experiences Skyros can offer a visitor is the Skyrian Carnival, which revives primal Dionysian customs, such as those of the “Geros” (Old Man), the “Korella” (Young Woman) and the “Trata” (Fishing Boat).
Between living traditions, sharply contrasting landscapes, and an authenticity difficult to find elsewhere, Skyros offers unpretentious beauty and serenity.
