When to go

Central Greece transforms with the seasons. Late winter to early spring sweeps you into the whirlwind of Carnival traditions: you will experience mystical nights with spirits under the cobblestones of Amfissa, colourful "battles" of flour in Galaxidi and traditional gaitanakia in Livadia. In spring, Roumeli is immersed in the devout atmosphere of Holy Week before erupting into the radiant celebration of Easter. In the summer, the region pulses to the rhythm of open-air festivals and all-night feasts under the stars. In the autumn the majestic reenactement of the Battle of Nafpaktos transforms its Venetian Harbour into a stage of historical memory and culture.  Whichever season you choose to experience the traditions of Central Greece, you will enjoy a different experience, each time unique.

Masqueraders, parade floats and theatrical events are prepared days in advance and the celebrations culminate with the gaitanakia featuring colourful ribbons, knitted by primary school students with undiminished enthusiasm. Join the whirl of movement, follow the dance steps and have fun with your heart, like the locals.

The myth of Konstantis in Amfissa

The myth of Konstantis in Amfissa

In Amfissa, you will experience one of the most special ritual customs of Greece. In the narrow streets of the traditional district of Harmaina, where the art of tanning once flourished, the myth of Konstantis is revived. According to local lore, Konstantis became a spirit when lightning struck his beloved Lenio. The two-day events begin on Friday night with music, food, dancing and the "Awakening of Konstantis", to continue the next day with the "Night of the Spirits" and a huge procession, ending in Kehagia Square. Bell bearers, leather bearers and mythical figures accompany the spirit in the nocturnal city, in an evocative reenactement that blends folk faith with artistic expression.

Then plunge into the crowd and join the most liberating "battle" of your life. During the flour war of Galaxidi, laughter, high spirits, colour, and carefree fun reign supreme, as the harbour becomes a joyful stage of celebration.
