Xanthi Old Town

The City of a Thousand Colours

In the traditional settlement of Xanthi, the grandeur of the past meets the vibrant energy of the present. This distinctive character was formally safeguarded in 1976, when the area was officially designated as a protected settlement, ensuring the preservation of its historical heritage. As you wander through its cobbled streets, you will encounter a striking palette of colours adorning the façades, while the characteristic sachnisi (projecting upper-storey structures supported by wooden beams) and elegant balconies reveal a harmonious blend of neoclassical and Ottoman architecture.
Just beyond the main urban fabric, near Freedom Square, the atmosphere shifts as you enter the district of the tobacco warehouses. These imposing buildings stand as silent witnesses to the era when Xanthi was a thriving centre of tobacco trade.
Everyday life in Xanthi remains authentic and far removed from the notion of a staged setting. Among well-tended gardens, ornate door knockers and warm, welcoming locals, you will discover a city truly worthy of its title – a city of a thousand colours.
Your exploration is best complemented by stops at the many spots scattered throughout the settlement. Traditional bakeries, artisan workshops, inviting cafés and contemporary bars create a lively setting where history blends seamlessly with youthful vibrancy.
Among the most notable landmarks are the Xanthi Folklore Museum, housed in the impressive Kougioumtzoglou Mansion, and the Church of St John the Baptist, which forms the spiritual heart of the old town.
