Zakynthos Town

Exploring the elegant charm of Zakynthos Town

Fioro di Levante, meaning “Flower of the East”, is the epithet that has accompanied Zakynthos for centuries. It was bestowed by the Venetians, who were captivated by the island’s beauty, musical tradition and intellectual flourishing.
The capital of Zakynthos is a living mosaic of history, culture and folklore. Although the town was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953, it was rebuilt with respect for Ionian architecture, preserving the aesthetic, colours and urban elegance that had defined it since the seventeenth century.
A key point of reference is Solomos Square, in the heart of the town, where the statue of Dionysios Solomos, Greece’s national poet, stands prominently. There you will also find the Museum of Zakynthos, housed in a grand neoclassical building and home, among other treasures, to works of the Cretan School, Cretan–Ionian icons and pieces of Ionian naturalism.
Of particular importance to the island’s religious life is the Monastery of Agios Dionysios, patron saint of Zakynthos. His feast is celebrated twice a year, in August and December, with processions and events that reveal the town’s deep bond with tradition and faith.
Heading up towards Bohali, make your way to the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos, which offers panoramic views over the town and the Ionian Sea. From here, enjoy an idyllic sunset as the light lends the capital a cinematic atmosphere.
Walk beneath the broad arches in Rouga and Strata Marina, visit the Museum of Solomos & Eminent Zakynthians in Saint Mark’s Square, and pause at the churches that shaped the island’s spiritual and social course.
Amid squares, libraries and small churches steeped in history, Zakynthos Town lives and breathes through its festivals, musical events, local celebrations by the harbour and its narrow streets. Cafés, small restaurants and cultural venues create an experience that introduces you to the island’s authentic character.
