Vathy

The heart of Odysseus’ homeland

Vathy is the capital of Ithaca and unfolds amphitheatrically around one of the Ionian’s most enchanting natural harbours. The town has been designated a traditional settlement since 1978 and preserves strong elements of Venetian architecture, with low-rise colourful houses and tiled roofs.
According to tradition, the Bay of Vathy is thought to correspond to the Homeric harbour of Phorcys, while at the centre of the harbour stands the small islet of Lazaretto with the picturesque chapel of the Saviour. Along the waterfront, you will come across the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca, with exhibits from prehistory to the Roman period, and the Maritime–Folklore Museum of Ithaca, which highlights the island’s seafaring identity.
Within and around the settlement stand out the Metropolitan Church of Panagia (Presentation of the Virgin Mary), the Cave of the Nymphs, the ruins of the acropolis of Alalkomenae on Aetos Hill, and the remains of a sanctuary of Apollo. Together they create a unique landscape where myth meets history, revealing Ithaca’s deep cultural imprint.
The Vathy area is an ideal place for peaceful holidays on beautiful Ithaca. The traditional settlement, with its single- and two-storey houses and picturesque alleyways, developed into Ithaca’s administrative and commercial centre, making the most of its position on the Ionian sea routes.
Get to know the island’s authentic rhythm. Stop at the charming cafés and tavernas by the sea and enjoy the view of the harbour and the sailing boats.
