Have a first-hand experience of the Cretan vineyard
Every May, the wineries of Crete open their doors and welcome you to a special event called Open Doors, an experience that combines wine tasting with getting to know the people behind each label. It is an opportunity to walk through the vineyards, taste wines and local products, get to know details of the production process and experience Cretan hospitality first hand.
The relationship of Crete with wine dates back to Minoan times. The existence of stone and clay wine presses in Archanes, Zakros and elsewhere, proves the importance of winemaking since then. Its secrets are passed down from generation to generation, in family wineries that combine tradition with know-how and love for the land.
The vineyards are spread out on the slopes of Heraklion and Rethymno, but also on the hills of Sitia and Chania. The temperate Mediterranean climate gives the wines of Crete a unique character. From Vilana and Vidiano to Kotsifali and Liatiko, each variety tells its own story. Four main PDO zones have been recognised on the island (Peza, Archanes, Dafnes and Sitia) that produce wines with a strong local character. Similarly, international varieties also thrive.
Experience where wine is born and enjoy the magic of the Cretan vineyard in your glass.
