Wines of Xanthi

From Homer’s Time to Today

Viticulture in Thrace dates back to ancient times, with historical sources indicating a thriving industry along the Thracian Sea coast. Even in Homer's epics, the region's wine held a prominent position, as it was used by Odysseus to intoxicate the Cyclops Polyphemus, while ancient Abdera was the centre of the worship of Dionysus and viticulture.
A Journey Through Time
Production continued uninterrupted until the late 19th century, when the phylloxera blight devastated the vineyards, leading the locals to cultivate tobacco instead. After 1920, refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace maintained the tradition on a small scale. However, since the late 20th century, a systematic effort has been under way to revive the vineyards, focusing on Avdira, which is now evolving with exceptional promise.
Varietals and Protected Designations
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) of Avdira was recognised in 1997, encompassing the communities of Avdira, Mandra, Myrodato and Mangana. The zone includes dry, semi-dry, and semi-sweet wines.

  •  White wines: Varieties such as Athiri, Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Roditis, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are used.

  •  Red and Rosé wines: Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah varieties dominate.

Rare indigenous grape varieties that have been preserved and present particular interest include the white Zoumiatiko (also known as Damiatis), the red Pamidi, and Mavroudi of Thrace.
Contemporary Wine Tourism
Although there are currently few wineries in Xanthi, they are steadily increasing in number, offering intriguing labels that showcase the unique terroir of the region. In Avdira, the first winery established offers comprehensive tour programmes, providing wine enthusiasts with the opportunity to experience the Thracian wine renaissance first-hand.
