Religious Monuments of Xanthi

A Multicultural Coexistence

In the Xanthi region, the harmonious coexistence of Christian and Muslim monuments creates a unique multicultural identity. For centuries, historic monasteries and churches have stood alongside traditional mosques and tekke lodges, offering a rich religious tapestry that reflects the historical journey of Thrace.
Christian Pilgrimage Sites
Above the Samakov district, Panagia Archangeliotissa monastery (16th century), home to the Ecclesiastical Museum, is a significant pilgrimage site offering exceptional views of the plain. Nearby, Panagia Kalamou convent owes its name to the discovery of its icon by the Kosynthos River, while Pammegiston Taxiarchon monastery, located on the hill of the Byzantine castle, now houses the Ecclesiastical School.
The Metropolitan Church of Timios Prodromos stands proudly in the heart of old town. This three-aisled church was rebuilt after the 1829 earthquakes, as were the churches of the Taxiarchon in Kavaki, St George, and Akathistou Ymnou. In Porto Lagos, Agiou Nikolaou monastery, a dependency of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, offers a enchanting spectacle, built on a small island in Lake Vistonida. In Avdira, the historic church of St Paraskevi preserves despotic icons from the 18th century.
Islamic Monuments
Islamic architecture is represented in historic mosques, such as Ahriyan Mosque of the Pomaks in old town. Cinar Mosque stands out for its ornate marble minaret, Servili Mosque on Skra Street evokes the imposing tobacco warehouses of the 19th century, while Muhacir Mosque incorporates rare baroque elements.
In Genisea, Kasaba Mosque impresses with its tall stone minaret, next to the elegant Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Of particular interest is Kutuklu Baba Tekke in Selino, a Bektashi tomb with a beautifully preserved türbe (burial monument). Lastly, in the Pomak villages, the mosques of Melivoia and Glafki stand out for their traditional care and ceramic-clad minarets.
This religious tapestry of Xanthi invites visitors on a journey of faith and history, where the past meets the present through the diversity, spirituality, and profound mutual respect of its inhabitants.
