Natural beneficial power
In Methana, the volcanic earth has left a gift that remains vibrant to this day. The thermal springs of the peninsula, known since antiquity, have shaped the character of the region through periods of prosperity and decline.
Although there is currently no organised public spa facility in operation, the natural springs remain free and accessible year-round. They are a part of the locals' daily lives, winter and summer, at all hours of the day and night.
The thermal waters of Methana are warm and rich in sulphur or chloride salts, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, fluctuating based on natural factors and even the tide.
You can enjoy a thermal bath at various locations. At the entrance of the spa town, next to the monumental historic building, the sulphur waters flow into the sea, creating an extensive thermal sea zone with a characteristic milky colour and a distinct aroma.
Further north, along the coastal road near the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, sodium-chloride waters gush from a cave and flow into a small natural cavity right by the waves.
In the seaside settlement of Agios Nikolaos, you will find the historic "Baths of Pausanias", which tradition links to the volcanic eruption of the 3rd century BC. Finally, near the sulphur springs, a private thermal bath facility also operates seasonally.
It is recommended that your stay in the water does not exceed 10–15 minutes, as the waters are intensely warm and rich in minerals. Caution is advised on the rocks, and those with a sensitivity to sulphur should take note.
Combine your thermal bath with a hike along the volcanic trails of Methana and complete the experience with a relaxing dip in the sea.
