Agia Fotini of Mantineia

A unique church in the plains of Mantineia

On the open horizon of the plain of Ancient Mantineia, a peculiar structure immediately stands out. Its form does not follow a single architectural logic: curves, towers, columns, and diverse morphological elements coexist in an unexpected composition of stone. The building resembles an architectural mosaic, where references to Ancient Greek, Byzantine, and folk traditions combine into a unified whole within the open landscape of the Arcadian plain. This is the church of Agia Fotini.
The work is the creation of Kostas Papatheodorou, an architect, painter, and hagiographer, who from 1970 onwards dedicated decades to its development, using stone from quarries and demolished buildings. The intention was clear: a unified narrative of Greek tradition, where ancient myth and Christian iconography coexist without hierarchy.
The building changes appearance throughout the day, as the light highlights its lines and textures in different ways. Inside, mosaics and figures from different eras meet in a space that functions more as an experiential universe than a conventional temple.
Only when you approach does its identity fully reveal itself: Agia Fotini has carved its own, entirely personal path in modern Greek architecture and continues to provoke dialogue, admiration, and questions.
