Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi

Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi

A Byzantine architectural creation on the northern side of Alonnisos

In the north of the island, between the bays of Megali Ammos and Tsoukalia, the chapel of Agioi Anargyroi is one of the most serenely reverent places on Alonnisos. Quite probably built in the post-Byzantine period, the chapel is well hidden in the dense vegetation and pine trees that cover the steep slopes. It is dedicated to the Saints Anargyroi, Cosmas and Damian, protectors of health and selfless help to others.
The main road stops about 500 meters before the chapel and the trail continues through a dense pine forest. Aromas of pine, thyme, and oregano will accompany you on the ascent, while the view to the Aegean Sea unfolds before you, impressive and unobstructed. If you are looking for a calm and secluded place to connect with yourself and nature, this route will reward you. Hiking requires suitable shoes and care.
Inside the chapel you can admire the well-preserved icons, as well as a wood-carved icon of the Saints, which, according to the locals, is considered miraculous. Its simple architecture, with its small dome and stone roof, reflects the traditional island style that has survived unchanged through the centuries.
The Saints Anargyroi are celebrated every year on 1 July, with a liturgy and a small festival. On the day of the great celebration, psalms echo through the area and homemade food is served among the pine trees. Besides being a point of reference for locals, the festival is an excellent occasion to experience the soul and energy of the land, with tradition playing the leading role.
