A “butterfly” in the middle of the Aegean Sea

A natural bridge between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, the island of Astypalea possesses a rich history, gorgeous seashores and a unique Chora. It is an enchanting destination that you will adore and want to visit again and again.
Astypalea or “Astropalia”, which resembles a butterfly on the map, has one of the most beautiful Choras in the Aegean. Here, white and blue blend wonderfully with colourful wooden railings on balconies, cobbled alleys and a few mansions. The Castle dominates the top of the hamlet, from which the domes of Evangelistria and Agios Georgios emerge. Further down, eight windmills stand proudly in the square, welcoming visitors.
The Chora and its small houses seem to pour down from both sides of the hill. On one side is Gialos, where the island's port was once located, while on the other stretches Livadi, a seaside hamlet smothered in mandarin trees and orchards, with small tavernas and cafés in front of a long beach. The rest of the island is arid and wild, with mountain masses and impressive geological formations framing sheltered beaches with deep blue waters.
Astypalea is an island that you fall in love with at first sight. It has its own particular pace; here night becomes day and it is a tradition to watch the sunrise emerge majestically from the sea. At the same time, it serves as a sanctuary, with remote and uniquely beautiful beaches, numerous caves and pebbled floors in abandoned chapels scattered across its mountain ranges.
