A stone’s throw from Athens, at the exact point where Evia almost touches mainland Greece, lies Chalkida. Built on both sides of the Evripos Strait, the city of the sacred Arethousa spring serves as the gateway to the entire island of Evia. Its strategic position has made Chalkida a crossroads of ideas and cultures since antiquity, serving as a powerful stronghold for the conquerors of every era. Today, it is a favourite destination for short getaways from the capital. Before the construction of the cable-stayed High Bridge of Evripos, usually referred to as the New Chalkida Bridge, access was via the Palea Gefyra (Old Bridge), which remains the city’s absolute landmark. Famous for the tidal phenomenon where the water changes direction approximately every six hours, the old sliding bridge draws thousands of visitors who flock to observe this rare spectacle. Chalkida’s beautifully designed pedestrian promenade pulses with life day and night, thanks to the dozens of cafés and restaurants lined up along the waterfront. Atop Kanithos Hill, the Venetian fortress of Karababa dominates the skyline, offering the best views of the city and the entire Evian Gulf.
