An island with a mythical identity

Kythira has always been veiled in a mythical, poetic aura. According to Greek mythology, this was the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. In the 18th century, it inspired the painting ‘The Embarkation for Cythera’ by French painter Antoine Watteau. In the 19th century, French poet Charles Baudelaire wrote ‘A Voyage to Kythira’, while in the 20th century, Greek director Theodoros Angelopoulos shot a film that by the same name.
Also known as Tsirigo, Kythira is the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands, located at the crossroads of the Aegean and Ionian seas. Nature has endowed it with unique landscapes: valleys ending at the sea, caves, mountainsides at times dressed in green and at others wild and rocky, running waters, and wonderful beaches.
It is an island that seems frozen in time, as if by magic. Its authenticity, slow pace of life, and the atmosphere that surrounds it are charming. Picturesque little villages, architecture that draws both on Venetian style and on elements from Crete and Mani, Byzantine castle towns, and trails that lead to chapels and abandoned villages compose an unpretentious and deeply romantic destination.
There is much to do on Kythira. Hiking and cycling will bring you closer to nature, and climbing and a Via Ferrata-type mountain trail will get your adrenaline pumping.
Before leaving the island, take a special souvenir with you: a dried bunch of sempre viva. This beautiful endemic flower grows exclusively in the southern regions of Kythira and on the islet of Chytra. Its name, from the Italian "sempre viva", meaning "always alive", perfectly describes how it remains unchanged over time, just like Kythira.
