Isolation, relaxation and memory

Small and secluded, the island of Agios Efstratios —which locals call Ai Stratis— is marked by the wounds and memories of modern Greek history, having served as a place of exile. And yet, despite its cumbersome past, it shines through its natural beauty and, above all, the nobility of its people.
The island's only hamlet is built in the valley formed by two streams. Until the devastating earthquake of 1968, which destroyed the old hamlet on the hill, the residents of Ai Stratis kept their orchards here. In the small picturesque harbour with its magnificent sunset views, fishing boats and trawlers dock, swaying on the gentle waves.
With about two hundred permanent residents, Ai Stratis lives at its own pace. Cut off from the rest of the world, it retains a unique charm. A few days are enough to discover the locals’ kindness, courtesy and thirst for communication. They will unhesitatingly open their hearts and share the map of their land with you. They will tell you about the volcanic grey beach with its warm waters. From the harbour, alongside the fishing boats, you will set off on their vessels to circumnavigate the island and discover beaches inaccessible by land.
The island's sea caves are home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), while birds of prey and seabirds nest on the steep cliffs. Across the seabed stretch seagrass meadows, called “fykiades” by locals, which provide shelter to numerous marine organisms and act as a natural barrier protecting the island from erosion.
And if you thought that Ai Stratis was the barren island recounted in the tales of exiles, a final surprise awaits you: its south-eastern part is dominated by greenery, featuring a unique oak forest. Here you will find invaluable opportunities for hiking on unmarked trails and for moments of peace and reflection. While hiking, ensure you are properly equipped, stay informed about the trails and follow all safety measures.
In the heart of the Aegean Sea, Ai Stratis keeps the secret of serenity, tranquillity and memory well-hidden. If you visit once, you will certainly want to return.
