The verdant island of Saronic Gulf
Picturesque alleys, neoclassical buildings with red roofs and blue shutters characterise the town of Poros, which is built amphitheatrically, overlooking the Lemonodasos (Lemon Forest) on the opposite coast of the Peloponnese. At the top stands the famous clock tower, facing the beautiful sunset. Neoclassical houses, well-kept courtyards, and elegant columns bear witness to the historical value of Poros. Fishing boats and yachts sway in front of passers-by enjoying a stroll along the waterfront, while at Pounta fishermen mend their nets just as they did in the past.
Relaxed, beautiful beaches complete the dreamlike and unpretentious setting. So close to Athens, yet so far away. For the American author Henry Miller, Poros was an antidote to alienation, while the Greek poet Giorgos Seferis summed it up in a few words: light, silence, sea, rocks, and the scent of lemons.
