The island of aromas

Spetses is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan islands of the Saronic Gulf. In antiquity, it was called Pityousa, due to the many pine trees that covered it. The current name of the island dates back to the era of Venetian rule and is due to its fragrant flowers: isola di spezie means “island of aromas”.
Spetses emerged as one of the strongest naval and commercial powers in the Aegean Sea in the 18th century AD. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, many Spetsiot captains offered their ships and fortunes to the Struggle, with Laskarina Bouboulina, a female symbol of seamanship and freedom, as an emblematic figure.
Today, Spetses is possessed by a refined and aristocratic aura, combining history with modern life. Magnificent beaches and pine-clad routes weave a picturesque setting, while a stroll along the Old Harbour will enchant you. The narrow streets of Spetses are characterised by particularly interesting traditional architecture, with neoclassical houses, pebbled courtyards, colourful flowers, and elegant balconies.
Spetses has a charm of yesteryear. The absence of cars enhances its atmosphere. Transport is carried out by bicycles and horse-drawn carriages, so prepare for a magical journey through time.
