From ancient mines to industrial Greece

Lavrio is a small coastal town on the east coast of Attica, in an area of hills covered with olive trees and full of small coves. It is the third largest passenger port in Athens and a gateway to the Cyclades islands, with the island of Kythnos and Kea, located directly opposite, as its first destinations.
Lavrio is primarily known for its mines. The region's geology was blessed with valuable silver deposits, a factor that has shaped its history to the present day. The exploitation of the area's rich subsoil began as early as 3000 BC and the silver that was mined became the driving force of ancient Athens. The ancient miners used ingenuity and expertise to create one of the most impressive mining systems of the ancient world, leaving their mark on the landscape to this day.
Centuries later, Lavrio rediscovered its vitality as the first industrial city of modern Greece. The large metallurgical facilities of the 19th century, the smokestacks, and the stone buildings stand as silent reminders of that era.
Lavrio is currently a tranquil seaside town, where industrial buildings and neoclassical structures blend with the beautiful light of Attica. This industrial landscape serves as an open-air museum of memory and history, and is part of the Lavreotiki Geopark, which is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The modern marina accommodates sailboats, the tavernas offer fresh seafood and other delicacies, and the beautiful beaches of the area are perfect for a refreshing swim.
