Myths, history, and the most iconic sunset in Attica

Sounio is a promontory at the southernmost tip of Attica, where the land ends and the Aegean Sea begins. At the top of the hill stands the Temple of Poseidon, one of the most iconic ancient temples in Greece, which seems to almost hover above the sheer cliff.
Built in the 5th century BC, it served as a sacred site and a strategic point of control for the sea passage leading to Athens. Myth would have it that King Aegeus fell into the sea from here when he saw black sails on the ships of his son Theseus and was thus convinced that Theseus had failed to kill the Minotaur. That is how the Aegean Sea got its name.
Sounio is synonymous with sunsets. As the sun descends, the columns of the temple are bathed in golden-red hues and surrounded by a unique energy. The experience is almost ritualistic and the temple has been a place of pilgrimage for romantic poets and travellers who have visited Greece over the centuries. Many of them celebrated Cape Sounio in poems and carved their names into the marble – a practice that was commonplace in the past but is in no way permitted today.
Around the archaeological site, the landscape of Attica unfolds with simplicity, featuring green hills extending down to the coast. Small coves with clear waters and sparse vegetation create an environment that is ideal for swimming, while seaside tavernas serving fresh fish complete the experience.
Cape Sounio is a captivating place, a source of inspiration for ancient myths and modern poems. Here, history and the natural landscape meet in a unique way, offering one of the most striking images of Attica.
