On the crossroads of the East and the West

Strategically located near the border with Turkey, Alexandroupoli connects Europe and Asia. One of the most interesting cities in northern Greece, it serves as the centre of a truly blessed region. Situated next to the Thracian Sea, it has, for decades, functioned as a gateway for cultures, commerce, and movement.
In the mid-19th century, fishermen from Maroneia and Makri established the small settlement of Dede-Agats, which means "the monk's tree." According to tradition, an oak tree stood there, beneath whose shade a dervish taught and was buried. From this humble origin, Alexandroupoli emerged, now combining the relaxed pace of a coastal city with the vibrancy of a modern urban centre.
In the summer evenings, the heart of the town beats along the coastal road, which is filled with people enjoying a stroll or the traditional tsipouro tavernas by the sea (tavernas that serve mezes and pomace brandy).
The area preserves its customs and traditions, a result of the coexistence of diverse populations and cultures. Traditional festivals, music, and dances of Thrace, along with customs related to the circle of life, continue to be held in the city and surrounding villages. Thracian hospitality and celebrations that bring together young and old give Alexandroupoli its authentic character.
Surrounding the city lies an area of exceptional natural beauty: the Evros River Delta, with wetlands and rare bird species, the beaches of the Thracian Sea, and Samothrace, visible on the horizon, inviting you to escape.
