The matriarch of Thrace

Built amphitheatrically at the foot of the Rhodope mountain range, Xanthi is one of Thrace's jewels. Strategically located at the crossroads connecting the Black Sea with the Aegean and Europe with Asia, it has always been a meeting place for cultures, people and ideas.
Famed for its celebrated carnival and vibrant cultural identity, Xanthi retains a strong sense of tradition while embracing a contemporary, youthful spirit. The Kosynthos river flows through the city, dividing yet uniting neighbourhoods with distinct character: an old town and a modern one, churches and mosques, diverse dialects and Greek, all combining to create a fascinating multicultural mosaic.
Xanthi's old town is a vibrant open-air museum, its narrow lanes and stately homes displaying Ottoman and Western influences, evoking a bygone era. Beautiful churches and picturesque squares complete the setting, in a city that flourished particularly in the 19th century, when the cultivation and processing of tobacco brought wealth and prosperity to Xanthi.
Beyond the city, the Nestos river forms Xanthi’s natural eastern border. Its course creates meanders of remarkable natural beauty as it traverses the verdant Thracian land, gradually merging with the sea alongside Lake Vistonida.
