All over Greece
Yogurt, one of the oldest foods, is a standout product of Greece’s rich livestock tradition. It is made from fresh milk that is thickened and cultured with the help of two beneficial bacteria. Traditional Greek yogurt—thick, creamy, and full of flavour—is produced from pure sheep’s milk, usually from small dairy farms. In stores, it is often found in small cups or clay pots with the characteristic “skin” on top, which concentrates all its aroma and taste.
Large dairy producers in Greece primarily use cow’s milk to create a wide range of high-quality yogurts: plain cow’s milk yogurt from full-fat, semi-skimmed, or skimmed milk; specially formulated children’s yogurts enriched with nutrients for proper growth and nutrition; and strained cow’s milk yogurt (0%–10% fat) with additions like milk cream, fruit pieces, or cereals—ideal as a dessert or in cooking. In recent years, Greek strained yogurt has also conquered international markets, experiencing rapid growth in sales worldwide.
The Recipe for Health
Yogurt, essential in the daily diet of both children and adults, is a valuable and easily digestible food with high biological value. Rich in calcium, phosphorus, B vitamins, and protein, it helps support children’s proper growth, strengthen the immune system, improve digestive function, and generally maintain overall good health.
Delightful with Every Meal
Yogurt is widely used in Greek cuisine: it tops pilafs or serves as a refreshing accompaniment to spicy appetisers. It is served with roasted or fried vegetables, meatballs, and grilled meats. It is used as a sauce, a salad dressing, or baked over chicken and certain beef dishes until it thickens and binds like béchamel. Yogurt also seasons dishes, mixed with cucumber and garlic to make the famous tzatziki, or incorporated into savoury cornmeal pies—a tradition from northern mountainous regions of Greece. In some areas, it is even served as a chilled summer soup.
It can be swirled with honey, spoon sweets, fresh seasonal fruit, nuts, or cereals as a light, mid-meal snack. Its divine flavour also enhances desserts, cookies, and cakes, both sweet and savoury.
