A nature and exploration experience on Mount Taygetos
Near the main village of Xirokampi, in the heart of Mount Taygetos, lies the Anakolo Gorge. Boasting impressive rock formations and abundant running waters, it is the only gorge in Greece that can be traversed by a conventional car, with its entrance discreetly tucked behind the open-air amphitheatre of Xirokampi. The road crossing is possible as far as the medieval settlement of Koumousta.
The Anakolo Gorge is part of the Natura 2000 network and is home to dozens of endemic species of flora and fauna.
Three marked hiking trails lead to key points, such as the Gola Monastery, the Taygetos mountain refuge, the forested area of Pentavloi, and the springs of the Rasina torrent, where waterfalls and natural pools create ideal conditions for a refreshing break. Along these routes, you will encounter dozens of springs that keep the landscape vibrant throughout the year.
The area is also ideal for mountain biking, horse riding, and mild 4×4 routes.
Experience the Anakolo Gorge for yourself and discover one of the most vibrant natural spots on Mount Taygetos.
