The Regional Unit of Hania boasts numerous renowned monasteries that seamlessly blend historical significance with the unparalleled beauty of the Cretan landscape.
Agia Triada Tzangarolon Monastery: Venetian Heritage
The most renowned are Agia Triada Tzangarolon Monastery, built at the foot of Mount Tzobomylos. The monastery was founded in the 17th century by two brothers who were monks, Ieremias and Lavrentios Tzangarolos, sons of a Venetian family. During the Cretan revolt of 1866, the monastery was abandoned and, in 1877, it served as a meeting place for the revolutionaries.
Architecture and Cultural Treasures
Stroll through a long avenue of cypress trees to arrive at the main gate, where two columns in the Ionic and Corinthian orders greet visitors. A little further along stands a magnificent bell tower, built in 1864.
The main church is dedicated to Agia Triada (the Holy Trinity), and the chapels are dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (the Life-Giving Spring) and Agios Ioannis Theologos (Saint John the Theologian). Inside the monastery there is a museum housing works from the post-Byzantine period and manuscripts preserved from the 19th century and earlier.
Gouverneto Monastery: Our Lady of the Angels
The Gouverneto Monastery, a stavropegic monastery built on the edge of cape Melecha, is just four kilometres from Tzangarolon Monastery, and has been designated as a listed monument since 1900 by decision of the Holy Synod.
To get to the monastery, head north from Tzagarolon Monastery, following the narrow road through a stunning natural landscape, abundant with olive trees, carob trees, shrubs, and wild herbs. In the centre of the courtyard lies the church of Our Lady of the Angels, a domed church with an impressive façade.
Katholiko Monastery: The Oldest Hermitage on Crete
A mere half-hour walk from the monastery lies the abandoned Agiou Ioannou Monastery (monastery of Saint John), also known as Katholiko Monastery. It is likely the oldest monastery in Crete, dating back to the 6th-7th century.
The monastery seems to be perched on the canyon face. Approach it by traversing Avlaki gorge, with its wild and captivating beauty. This is where Saint John the Hermit lived his ascetic life.
