A "modern" monastery
What makes Trikorfo Monastery, at an altitude of 620 m and 13 km from Nafpaktos, one of the largest pilgrimages in Central Greece, even though it was established only in the 1990s? First of all, the love of the faithful for Saint Augustine and the "Saint of Joy", the healer Saint Seraphim of Sarov, who reportedly appeared to the faithful turning night into day. Then, it is the bell tower of the monastery. It is one of the largest bell towers in the world, with 400 semantra and 62 bells. And finally, the monks themselves, starting with the very dear to the faithful, Elder, Archimandrite and lifelong abbot Nektarios Moulatsiotis, who is also the founder of the monastery.
Beyond the premises, the frescoes and the holy relics, here you will find 40 monks, with great social, cultural and spiritual activity. Among other things, they cultivate the land, raise animals, produce award-winning honey, pasta, cosmetics, nama (ecclesiastical wine) and beer, while at the same time they are engaged in hagiography and writing, publishing books and a periodical. They are also known as the "Paparokades" (Priest Rockers), inspired by their popular music band "Eleftheri", which they formed in the 1990s, as part of their youth outreach mission. At the same time, they maintain a popular YouTube channel, under the name of Elder Nektarios.
The most fascinating time to visit the monastery is undoubtedly on the day when the semantra or the bells resound all together. The semantra are struck collectively every 5 years on the feast of St. Seraphim, with 400 worshippers striking them by hand (most recently in 2025). The bells ring in unison 7 times a year, on the feast days of the two saints, on the celebrations of St. Nektarios and St. Christopher, on the Assumption, on Christmas Day and on the Resurrection.
