Natural beauty, history, and luxury

Elounda is located near Agios Nikolaos, on the north coast of Crete, and is one of the most famous and luxurious tourist resorts in Greece. It is a small harbour in the idyllic lagoon formed between the island of Spinalonga and Mirabello Bay.
The history of the area begins with the ancient city of Olous, which served as an important commercial and religious centre. During the Venetian period, the salt pans were created, supplying salt to a portion of Europe. It was also during this time that Spinalonga Fortress was built on the small island opposite, for the protection of the bay.
Spinalonga, besides being an exceptionally fortified fortress – to such an extent that it remained in Venetian hands for 65 years after the Ottoman conquest of Crete – served as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. Victoria Hislop's novel The Island highlighted the history of Spinalonga on a global scale, making it one of the most visited sites in Crete.
Elounda retains its cosmopolitan character, occasionally hosting high-profile figures from around the world with the utmost discretion. At the same time, it encompasses everything that makes Crete unique: excellent beaches, delicious cuisine with pure raw ingredients, a rich history, and authentic landscapes
