One of the sunniest cities in Greece
The modern town is situated near the ancient Ierapytna, one of the most important cities of Crete, which flourished particularly during the Roman period. The location of Ierapytna, at the narrowest point of Crete, was strategically advantageous for the commercial activities of the time, and it prospered due to its proximity to Egypt. Today, its history is reflected in monuments such as the Venetian fortress of Kales on the seafront, the old harbour, and the traditional hamlet, where Venetian and Ottoman buildings are preserved.
Ierapetra combines vibrancy and hospitality with a sense of tranquillity.
