Agios Nikolaos is located in eastern Crete, in Mirabello Bay, and is a vibrant town with a lively atmosphere all year round. Its landmark is Lake Voulismeni, around which the hamlet was built. While it is essentially a small lagoon, the locals nevertheless refer to it as a lake, as it was connected to the sea in 1870, when a narrow canal was opened. Its depth is disproportionately large, which led to the birth of legends that the lake is bottomless. The vibrant life of Agios Nikolaos unfolds around the lake, with tavernas, restaurants and bars, as well as events such as cliff diving competitions and traditional Easter celebrations. Agios Nikolaos is a modern town that began to be built in the mid-1860s, when the need arose for a port in eastern Crete. The city was built on the ruins of Kamara, which was the port of ancient Lato, with remnants scattered throughout the current urban fabric. Around it spreads the magnificent nature of eastern Crete, with mountains and gorges, wonderful food and hospitable people.
