The Cave of Seduction and Worship
The imposing Lasithi Plateau is home to the Dikteon Cave, one of Greece’s most important caves. This mythical site is considered the birthplace of Zeus and the place where the nymphs prepared the bridal bed for the union of the supreme god with Europa, when he transformed into a magnificent bull and led the beautiful princess into the depths of the Cretan earth.
A Journey to Myth
At an altitude of 1,025 metres, near the village of Psychro, access to the cave is an experience unlike any other. After a winding ascent from Stalida or Malia, visitors follow a stone path through oak trees. The panoramic views of the Plateau and the air, fragrant with wild herbs, set the scene, while the entrance to the cave, absolutely silent and humid, inspires awe.
Descend into the Depths of the Earth
A 250-metre path has been developed, leading to the main hall, adorned with impressive rock formations. The most captivating feature is the lake, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. The ‘Mantle of Zeus’, a colossal, cascading stalactite that hangs above the water, dominates the scene. The numerous archaeological finds, such as the built shrine and ritual votive offerings exhibited at the Museum of Heraklion, confirm the enduring sacredness of the site.

While the Dikteon Cave reigns supreme, the area also boasts other caves of geological interest, such as Kronion (Trapeza), Peristera, and Selena (Trypa tis Selenas). Karst formations are further complemented by Chonos and the stunning Chavga gorge, making Lasithi an explorer’s paradise.
