The Cave of the Senses
At the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese, on the eastern slopes of Mount Parnon, lies one of Europe’s most impressive caves. Kastania Cave stands out for its incredible density and variety of formations, ranking second in its category across the continent. It took nature three million years to create this unparalleled lithomatic decorative formation along a 500-meter route.
A World of Imagination
Visitors are greeted by forms reminiscent of octopuses, corals, jellyfish, and exotic plants. The formations consists of crystalline calcium carbonate, enriched with metal oxides that give the cave a unique seven-coloured palette. You will see rare formations such as discs, eccentrics and helictites, and you may even encounter the dolichopod, the blind and transparent insect that lives there.
A Journey Through the Chambers
The tour commences in the First Chamber and continues through the descending Red Chamber and the Water Chamber, named after the basin that led to the serendipitous discovery of the cave. This is followed by the Apartments of the Bushes and the impressive Chamber of Mushrooms with its distinctive stalagmites.
The route crosses the Royal Stairway to the Chamber of the Fir Trees, adorned with colossal stalagmites, and then to the Chamber of Candles with its alabaster formations. Following the Stairway of Water Lilies, visitors come to the Chocolate Chamber named after a pillar that starkly contrasts the pristine white and translucent Alabaster Chamber. The tour ends at the Large Balcony, offering panoramic views of the entire route.
Access and Experience
The cave is located 17 kilometres from Neapoli, Lakonia. The route offers an unforgettable journey through lush mountain slopes, Byzantine churches, medieval towers, and gorges with ancient watermills, all with views of the Myrtoan Sea. A charming café in the courtyard provides local delicacies for relaxating after your exploration.
