The easternmost tip of Crete

Today, the Venetian fortress of Kazarma overlooks the city, a reminder of its strategic importance throughout the centuries. Sitia is also the birthplace of the poet Vitsentzos Kornaros, who composed the ‘Erotokritos’, a 17th-century verse narrative that imbues the area with a distinct cultural identity.
