A voyage to the island of Artemis

Leros, a Dodecanese island, lies north-west of Kalymnos. It retains a low profile, offering an idyllic haven for tranquil holidays. Leros is a delicately wrought gem amidst the sea, boasting crystalline waters, captivating history, local delicacies, and distinctive architecture.
Continuously inhabited since antiquity, the island was successively occupied by the Knights Hospitaller, the Ottomans, and the Italians, who sought to transform it into a fortified military base due to its strategic location and numerous, expansive natural harbours. To this end, they constructed an entire city, Porto Lagos, which exemplifies exquisite rationalist architecture.
Leros is a fertile, largely level land, punctuated by gentle, verdant hills and valleys replete with olive groves, citrus orchards, and fig trees. The island’s coastline is remarkably intricate, featuring bays, natural harbours, sheltered coves, and exquisite pebble and sandy beaches. Furthermore, it is designated a Natura 2000 protected area, recognising its diverse flora.
On Leros, you will behold exquisite neoclassical buildings and scattered tower-houses, harkening back to an era when inhabitants required protection from pirate raids. Castles, windmills, and dispersed churches complete the picturesque scene.
Here, life unfolds at a languid pace: the sea, leisurely strolls, quaint tavernas serving local produce, and welcoming locals weave a destination with a distinct character.
