An active volcano and untamed beauty

Nisyros is a small yet imposing island in the Dodecanese, a place of wild beauty and exceptional geological interest. It is distinguished by its active volcano and its striking, almost mystical character.
According to Greek mythology, the island emerged during the Gigantomachy, when Poseidon cleaved a rock from Kos and hurled it at the giant Polybotes, burying him in the Aegean. The island’s volcanic fumes were thought to be the defeated giant’s wrathful exhalations.
The island’s aesthetic is defined by hamlets constructed from volcanic stone, featuring minimalist designs, pebble-paved squares, and courtyards brimming with vibrant hues. The volcano, with its striking caldera and geothermal fields, constitutes a singular natural landmark, a potent reminder of the forces slumbering beneath the surface.
Nisyros, continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, seamlessly blends natural beauty, history, and tradition into a rare harmony, offering a haven for every traveller who cherishes nature.
