The verdant jewel of the Ionian Sea

Paxi, a small but charming island of the Ionian archipelago, lies south of Corfu. Legend has it that the island formed when the god Poseidon struck Corfu with his trident, separating its southern part to accommodate his love for Amphitrite. The trident, according to myth, was discovered by the islanders and became its emblem.
The island impresses visitors with its lush vegetation, extensive olive groves dating back to the Venetian era, small vineyards, and rare flora, including approximately 450 plant species, some of which are endemic. Lace-like beaches and underwater caves, small coves, and verdant hills combine to form a jewel of an island in the Ionian Sea.
The charming Gaios, both the island's capital and main port, stands out with its colourful houses and views of the two verdant islets just fifty metres from its shore. Notable monuments to the daily life of the islanders are the carved cisterns scattered across the landscape, created to collect rainwater.
The beaches of Paxi are renowned for their unparalleled natural beauty..
Each summer, the Paxi Festival is held on the island, featuring a programme of music, theatre, and visual arts. One of the best-known traditional events in Paxi is the "Neroladia" festival, held annually in Gaios, usually in late July.
