Paxos Folklore Museum

A historic building with a neoclassical identity

On the waterfront of Gaios, the Paxos Folklore Museum is housed in an impressive neoclassical building dating from 1906. It is an architectural gem that originally served as a school. Its imposing presence on the harbourfront is not merely an aesthetic landmark, but also a guardian of the island’s historical memory. Since 1996, it has housed the rich collections of the Cultural Association of Paxos, offering visitors an informative glimpse into the evolution of local society through the centuries.
The museum’s exhibition rooms unravel the thread of time, beginning with finds from the Palaeolithic period and reaching as far as the era of the United States of the Ionian Islands. The display cases contain rare artefacts, such as historical documents, decrees and weapons that bear witness to the island’s struggles and political changes. Of particular interest is the collection of traditional costumes and everyday objects, which highlights the way of life of the people of Paxos during Venetian rule and the subsequent British protectorate.
One of the museum’s most charming features is its faithful reconstruction of a typical Paxian mansion. Thanks to authentic furniture, kitchen utensils and weaving tools, you are transported into the atmosphere of a household from past centuries. The collection is complemented by agricultural tools and objects related to olive cultivation, which was the islanders’ principal economic activity.
Discover through the collections of the Paxos Folklore Museum the memories, habits and traditions that shaped the island’s identity.
