An Artistic Landmark
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Florina is one of the most significant institutions in the country. It was founded in 1975 on the initiative of the Florina Artists’ House and is now housed in an impressive neoclassical building next to the Sakoulevas River.
History and Creators
Leading visual artists, such as Dimitris Mytaras, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Panayiotis Tetsis, and Dimosthenes Kokkinidis, championed the vision to showcase the city's artistic endeavours. The permanent collection features Ghikas' charcoal drawings, such as ‘Prosdokia’ (Expectation), as well as his works ‘Ydra’, and ‘Mikrospita’ (Small Houses), which highlight his Cubist perspective. Expressionism is admirably represented by Panayiotis Tetsis' landscapes of Sifnos, while Alekos Fasianos contributes his iconic ‘Apples of Knowledge’.
The ‘Tribute to El Greco’ Collection
One of the museum’s most prized sections is the 1995 donation, which comprises 137 works. The highlight is ‘Saint Peter’ by Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco). The portrait captivates with the saint’s fiery gaze, the folds of his garments, and the artist’s masterful use of light. This collection also includes works by Kostas Tsoklis, such as ‘Seascape’, and engravings from Florence.
Contemporary Design and Local Identity
The museum houses over 900 works, with a particular focus on artists from northern Greece. Special mention should be made of Florina-born Giorgos Gazeas, who captures the picturesque quality of the city through expressionist techniques. The collection is complemented by a section of sculptures, engravings, and a specially designed area for constructions and installations.
A visit to the museum offers comprehensive insight into the evolution of Greek art, establishing Florina as an undisputed artistic destination that connects local creativity with global artistic heritage.
