If you dream of a journey back in time, board the ferry for Fourni and surrender to the charm of old Greece. Here, the simplicity and hospitality of the people, the peace and the authentic beauty of nature compose a place that will enchant you from the first moment. Fourni, a small island complex between Ikaria and Samos, consists of dozens of islets and rocky outcrops, of which only Fourni and Thymaina are inhabited. Despite their size, they hide a long history: ancient acropolises, sanctuaries, altars of Poseidon and 58 recorded shipwrecks dating from the Archaic to the Byzantine periods. In medieval times, the area was a base for pirates, who found refuge in the countless fjords and hidden coves. It is no coincidence that they were then called the “Korseoi Islands”, derived from koursema (piracy). Fishing remains the main occupation of the locals, and Fourni boasts one of the largest fishing fleets in the Aegean Sea – disproportionately large for the island’s size. It is certainly a paradise for fish lovers: common dentex, red porgy, common pandora, dusky grouper and abundant seafood, such as lobsters. Indeed, the locals boast that they make the "best lobster pasta in the world"! In the Chora, the island’s port, you will find flower-filled courtyards, paved streets and white-washed mulberry trees. Just 1km away, Kambi, with its three windmills and sandy beach, is ideal for swimming and relaxing under the tamarisk trees. However, the true revelation is Chrysomilia. Located 14km from the Chora, it is a paradise of tranquillity, with many beaches all around and the most picturesque fishing shelter in the Aegean Sea. Thymaina, with its few inhabitants, remains untouched by mass tourism. There, time seems to pass more slowly, and life follows the rhythm of the sea.
